Self-Build Family Home
Kirkheaton, Huddersfield

Located in the scenic village of Kirkheaton, Huddersfield, this project involved the construction of a bespoke detached family home on a single self-build plot.

The client’s vision was clear from the outset — to create a modern, energy-efficient home that would combine striking architectural design with low running costs for long-term family living.

The property is designed around open, light-filled living spaces, with a key architectural highlight being the feature glazed gable to the rear elevation.

This impressive glazed section floods the interior with natural light and provides stunning views across the private garden, creating a strong connection between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces.

As a self-builder, the priorities in the design and specification stages were:

  • Exceptional energy performance and airtightness.
  • Low operational costs and reduced environmental impact.
  • A durable, future-proof structure with flexibility for interior layout changes.

To meet these objectives, the client selected a PassivHaus® compatible wall fabric. A fully insulated, airtight timber frame solution (Option C).

Under Option C, Häuser provided a factory-insulated timber frame system, pre-fitted with high-performance insulation and airtightness membrane. This approach ensured:

  • Superior thermal performance with minimal heat loss (below 0.14u).
  • Consistent quality control through off-site manufacturing.
  • Rapid on-site assembly, reducing weather exposure and build time.

The result was a highly efficient building envelope, forming the foundation for a low-energy home that far exceeds typical Building Regulation standards.

The Kirkheaton self-build project showcases how a well-engineered timber frame system can help homeowners achieve a high-performance, sustainable home without compromising on style or individuality.

By choosing Option C, the client gained the benefits of a factory-insulated, airtight structure, leading to a comfortable, energy-efficient home that meets both their environmental and financial aspirations — a true success story in modern self-build design.
